Tiznit is the silver town and the gateway south — a walled town 95 km below Agadir where Berber silversmiths still work the souk, and where the road to Mirleft, Sidi Ifni and the deeper south properly begins. It's about 80 to 95 minutes from the airport on the fast main road across the Souss plain, one of the easier runs from AGA. There's no train and no direct bus from the terminal, so it's a private transfer or a grand taxi.

Getting there from the airport

Two realistic ways south:

  • Private transfer — meets you in arrivals and drives straight to your address inside or near the walls. From about €60 for the car, price fixed before you fly.
  • Grand taxi — does the run if you negotiate the fare at the rank, though for 95 km many prefer a fixed price agreed ahead. Agree it before loading.
  • Rental car — a good base for the deep south if Tiznit is your jumping-off point for Mirleft, Sidi Ifni or further; the road down is straightforward.

The silver souk and the walls

Tiznit's name is bound up with silver. Its jewellery souk is the place in Morocco for Berber silver — workshops hammering out bracelets, fibulae and necklaces, much of it still made by hand — and it's a far less touristed place to buy than Marrakech. Around the old town run red-ochre ramparts you can walk, with gates and towers largely intact. A private driver can wait while you explore the walls and the silver quarter, which is plenty for a half-day stop.

The gateway south

For a lot of travellers Tiznit isn't the destination but the hinge — the point where the fast road from Agadir hands over to the quieter coast and desert routes south. The roads to Mirleft and Sidi Ifni branch off here towards the Atlantic, and the deep-south routes towards the Sahara start from the same junction. If you're heading further, it's worth a stop to break the journey before the longer, slower legs beyond.

Local tip If you're shopping for silver, bring cash and time. The souk workshops expect a bit of friendly bargaining, the genuine handmade Berber pieces are worth seeking out over the mass-produced trays, and a relaxed browse beats a rushed one — another reason to have a driver wait rather than a taxi idling on the meter.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Tiznit from Agadir airport?
About 95 km south, roughly 80 to 95 minutes by road on the fast main route across the plain. There is no train and no direct airport bus, so it is a private transfer or a grand taxi negotiated for the run south.
How much is a transfer from Agadir airport to Tiznit?
A private door-to-door transfer starts around €60 for the whole car. A grand taxi can do the run if you negotiate the fare at the rank, but for 95 km many travellers prefer a fixed price agreed before they fly. Prices checked June 2026.
What is Tiznit known for?
Silver. Tiznit is Morocco's silver-jewellery capital, with a souk full of workshops turning out Berber pieces, and it is wrapped in striking red-ochre ramparts you can walk. It is also the gateway to the deep south — the road to Mirleft, Sidi Ifni and the desert beyond all starts here.
How long does the drive to Tiznit take?
Plan on 80 to 95 minutes. The road south from Agadir is fast and mostly straight across the Souss plain, so it is one of the easier runs — no winding sections until you turn off towards the coast beyond Tiznit.
Is Tiznit worth a stop?
For the silver souk and the ramparts, yes, even if only for a few hours. Many people pass through Tiznit on the way down to Mirleft or Sidi Ifni and break the journey here; a private driver can wait while you walk the walls and the jewellery quarter before carrying on south.
