While Agadir is famous for its massive sandy beach and resort hotels, the true Moroccan adventure begins just a few kilometers outside the city limits. The Souss region is characterized by arid sand dunes, Argan tree reserves, and traditional rural villages—all of which are best explored on a camel or a quad bike.
These half-day excursions are incredibly popular, very affordable, and offer a stark contrast to the modern tourist zone of Agadir.
Camel Rides vs. Quad Biking: Which to choose?
The choice ultimately comes down to the pace you prefer.
Camel Rides: A camel trek is slow, peaceful, and rhythmic. It is an iconic Moroccan experience and offers plenty of time to take photos and soak in the scenery. It is highly recommended for families with young children or anyone looking for a relaxing afternoon. Sunset is the best time to go.
Quad Biking & Buggies: If you prefer speed and adrenaline, renting a quad bike (ATV) or a dune buggy is the way to go. You will cover much more ground, splashing through mud, navigating sandy tracks, and kicking up dust. It is louder, dirtier, and immensely fun.
Where do the tours go?
For safety and environmental reasons, excursions are not allowed on the main Agadir tourist beach. Instead, tour operators will pick you up from your hotel and drive you about 15-20 minutes outside the city to the starting points.
Most routes take you through the Eucalyptus forest of Bensergao, out to the pre-Saharan sand dunes, and along the banks of the Souss river, where you might spot migratory flamingos. You will also pass through small Berber villages, and almost all tours include a stop at a local house for traditional mint tea and Moroccan biscuits.
What to wear and bring
Depending on your chosen activity, proper clothing will make the experience much more comfortable.
- For Camel Rides: Wear long trousers to prevent the coarse camel hair from chafing your legs. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, and sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.
- For Quad Biking: You will get dusty. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty. The tour operator will provide a helmet and goggles, but a bandana or scarf to cover your mouth and nose is highly recommended to keep the dust out. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory.
Prices and Booking
These excursions are very reasonably priced compared to European destinations.
A standard 2-hour camel ride typically costs between €20 and €25 per person. A 2-hour quad biking session costs around €35 to €45 for a single driver (passengers are usually cheaper).
